Form I-9 is one of the most important documents you must have filed with your new hires along with the IRS Form W-4. The Form ensures and verifies the employee’s identity and their authorization to work in the United States. Regardless of the employee’s status in the country, a new Form I-9 must be filed before the employee starts working or within the three days of working.
Employment Eligibility Verification Form I-9
A blank copy of the Form I-9 can be downloaded and printed out from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services website, formerly known as INS. You don’t have to file the I-9 with the USCIS but you must keep it in your files for three years and make it available for inspections by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Also, you must keep the I-9 files separately and not in each employee’s file. Unlike most other forms, you do not need to renew the I-9 Form each year.
If your new hire can not read or write English, a translator or preparer must sign Section 2 of the first page to verify their information. More information on I-9 Form is found on our front page.
